The FIFA World Cup, occasionally called the Football World Cup, but usually referred to simply as the World Cup, is an international association football (also known as soccer) competition contested by the men's national teams of the members of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport's global governing body. The championship has been awarded every four years since the first tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946, due to World War II.
Preparation for World Cup 2010
The Dutch construction company BAM and a South African industry colleague will be building a Johannesburg city stadium in Johannesburg. It will be the most important venue during the FIFA World Cup Soccer 2010 being held in South Africa. The construction of Soccer City, as the project is being referred to, has already started and is to be completed in 2009. The stadium will seat 94,700 spectators. Constructing the complex is expected to cost 160 million euros. BAM also want to focus efforts on building a new football stadium in the South African city of Port Elizabeth.
Format of World Cup Soccer 2010The tournament consists of two parts, the qualification phase and the final phase (officially called the World Cup Finals). The qualification phase, which currently take place over the three years preceding the Finals, is used to determine which teams qualify for the Finals. The current format of the Finals involves 32 teams competing for the title, at venues within the host nation (or nations) over a period of about a month. The World Cup Finals is the most widely-viewed sporting event in the world, with an estimated 715.1 million people watching the 2006 tournament final.
World Cup Soccer Qualifier 2010As the host nation, South Africa qualifies automatically for the tournament. However, South Africa is the first host since 1934 to participate in World Cup qualifiers. This is because the CAF qualifiers also serve as the qualifying tournament for the 2010 African Cup of Nations, for which South Africa had to qualify separately. Like the previous tournament, the defending champions Italy do not qualify automatically. The preliminary draw for the 2010 World Cup was held in Durban, South Africa, on 25 November 2007.The Final draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup will be staged in Cape Town, South Africa, in December 2009 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
